Your house has a lock on the door, right? WhatsApp needs its own locks too — and most people never turn them on.
The good news is it doesn't take long. In under five minutes you can check five settings that make your account far more secure and private. Let's go through them one by one.
1. Two-step verification
This is the most important one of all.
Without this protection, someone only needs your phone number and the 6-digit verification code WhatsApp texts you to take full control of your account. This is exactly how one of the most common scams works: someone messages you saying they "made a mistake" typing their number and asks you to forward the code you just received. If you do, you lose your account — and that person can use it to ask your contacts for money while pretending to be you.
How to turn it on: Go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Enable. Create a 6-digit PIN that only you know. Now, even if someone has your SMS code, they can't get in without that extra PIN.
2. Last seen, photo, and status privacy
Not everyone who has your number needs to know when you were last online, or see your profile photo or status. You can limit who sees this information — just your contacts, or even no one.
How to turn it on: Settings → Privacy → adjust each option (Last Seen, Profile Photo, Status) to whatever makes you most comfortable.
3. Who can add you to groups
Ever been added to a WhatsApp group without your permission, full of numbers you don't recognize? This setting prevents that. You can choose to let only your contacts — or no one — add you directly to a group without first sending you a private invite.
How to turn it on: Settings → Privacy → Groups → select "My Contacts" or "My Contacts Except..."
4. App lock with fingerprint or face recognition
Even if your phone is unlocked, you can require your fingerprint or Face ID before WhatsApp opens. It's an extra layer of privacy — useful if someone else occasionally uses your phone, or just to keep your conversations more protected.
How to turn it on: Settings → Privacy → scroll down to "App Lock" and turn it on.
5. Automatic media download
Feel like your phone's storage keeps filling up? One of the most common reasons is that WhatsApp automatically downloads every photo and video sent to you, even in large groups where you don't look at everything. Turning this off saves space and mobile data, especially if you don't have unlimited Wi-Fi.
How to turn it on: Settings → Storage and Data → Media auto-download → uncheck the boxes you don't need.
